The research question that The Munchie group hopes to explore, research, and find conclusions about is: How do portrayals of white women in magazines impact college-aged women and their beliefs on self-image? This information is crucial to today's society and culture for several reasons. Young women constantly face difficulties accepting their weight and body self-image. College students are prone to criticism and those negative remarks lead to increasing rates of anorexia and bulemia. These actions are universally seen, and are also seen on the University of Michigan campus. This issue of low self-esteem is something that can definitely decrease over time with the additional help of education, and the spreading of awareness. It is necessary that college-aged women are taught that what they view in media is not always an accurate depiction of reality. Researching information about white women in fashion magazines and seeing how college women are critiquing their bodies in response will enable improvement. Also, exploring the steps that have been taken to diminish these actions can present a counterargument and show the rates of progression.
To the left, there is an image of a model advertising for Ralph Lauren. This women is extremely under weight and thinks she looks good the way she is dressed. When a women is browsing through a magazine and comes across this photo, she will think that that portrayal is desirable. More research has to be done to prove that wrong and show that people should be more comfortable in their own skin.
